A detailed update on the activities and future projects of MFA SportsPLus Limited was given during a press conference in which Jason Micallef, the company’s chairman, called for greater investment in sports facilities to further support ongoing efforts to boost sports tourism in Malta.
Established in 2018 as a joint venture between the Malta Football Association and sports agency SLFC, MFA SportsPlus Limited provides a variety of services mostly related to sports tourism.
The company’s core activities include the organisation of training camps for local and foreign teams, both in Malta and abroad, the handling of all logistical aspects – travelling, accommodation, transport, as well as the management of marketing and broadcast rights.
At today’s press conference, held at the Civil Service Sports Club in Valletta, Mr Micallef said the company is striving to further strengthen its structure to be able to cater for the needs of the national teams, the requirements of the association as well as to expand its operations.
Apart from organising training camps for several foreign club and national teams, which also include the annual TipSport Malta Cup during winter, MFA SportsPlus has assisted Maltese clubs participating in the 2020/21 UEFA club competitions by handling the accommodation, flights and logistical requirements of Hibernians, Sirens and Floriana.
Mr Micallef said Malta needs more sports facilities to be able to offer a more competitive package to foreign teams interested in holding training camps here, noting that there are ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Tourism and the relevant authorities to further improve this concept which is beneficial for the country’s economy as well as football as the income is re-invested into the game.
The Malta FA also has plans to improve and increase its footballing facilities.
Renowned English Premier League club Manchester United had planned to organise a training camp in Malta in September through MFA SportsPLus Limited but this was not possible due to the travel restrictions introduced by the British Government due to COVID-19.
Mr Micallef said that the company will be pursuing discussions with SportMalta over the possibility of working together in view of the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) being held in Malta in 2023, adding that MFA SportPlus is willing to share its expertise and experience with other sports.
Helmut Amhof, MFA SportsPlus representative, said the company has already received several requests for winter training camps and is in the process of assessing these proposals. He added that, since August 2019, MFA SportsPlus Limited has worked with 45 teams – senior, Under-21, youth and women’s national teams, foreign and local clubs. These activities produced around 15,000 bed nights, mostly during the low season.
Mr Amhof thanked all the partners who work closely with MFA SportsPlus Limited, especially the Malta Tourism Authority and Malta MedAir, and all the hotels and service providers for their co-operation.
