After hitting the woodwork three times in the space of five minutes, Tarxien would have been forgiven if they thought that lady luck had abandoned them as few would have predicted a resounding win of this proportions.

However, a silky second-half performance by the Rainbows, nourished by Vanger Conceicao da Silva’s jinking play. coincided with the sudden slump of Senglea.

Vanger scored twice to help Tarxien Rainbows sweep past Senglea Athletic for their first Premier League win of the new season.

Vanger illuminated an indifferent game and came closest to breaking the impasse when he hit the crossbar. Demonstrating his strength and ability to run with the ball he twisted past Dejan Kukic in the box and slammed a shot against the foot of post with Matthew Farrugia beaten.

On 26 minutes, Jurgen Debono also hit the woodwork, the midfielder’s superbly flighted effort rebounding off the bar.

The Rainbows were looking more confident and Senglea were rescued by a third woodwork in the space of five minutes. Vito Plut’s effort was saved by Farrugia with the aid of the post.

Tarxien’s pressure finally paid off on the half hour mark when Brandon Muscat’s cross hit the back of the unfortunate Nikola Terzin and rebounded into the net.

After the break, Wilkerson found himself one-on-one with Daniel Fernandes but the Portuguese keeper spread his large frame and pulled off a good save. A powerful 20-metre Wilkerson free-kick was parried again by the Tarxien goalkeeper.

On 68 minutes, Plut found Vanger who ran his way into the box and fell under the challenge of Farrugia.

In doing so, he won a penalty which he subsequently scored but the goalkeeper vehemently protested his innocence to the point he was sent for an early bath.

On 68 minutes, Vanger further underlined his burgeoning reputation with a neat finish.

There was no let-up for Tarxien however, when Alan Abela turned Cedric Zahra’s driven pass across the face of goal into his own net.

And with full-time looming Plut capitalised on some lax defending to smash home from close-range.
