Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by the Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Clifton Grima, inaugurated the second phase of the Basketball Pavilion project in Ta’ Qali, worth more than one million euros.
The works of the second phase included the demolition of the internal structures and the reconstruction of the stands so that now this facility has a capacity of 1,100 seats.
In addition, new dressing rooms and even new offices were created for the Malta Basketball Association. This complemented the first phase works which included improvements to the original steel structure and the building from the outside.
In his speech, Prime Minister Abela said how important it is to nurture the value of sport in our children. He noted how this investment has made the arena accessible even to people with disabilities who can now play basketball in Ta ’Qali.
Dr Abela said that we must believe in what we do to keep the level going. He mentioned how this is part of the vision of this government for the next 10 years and that we are focused on seeing young people rise in this and every other field.
Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima said how sport has a positive impact on our lives and society. He stressed how the high level of sport in our country is bearing fruit even in countries outside Malta.
Chief Executive of Sport Malta Mark Cutajar mentioned how this government cares about sports and this is shown by the various projects that are being carried out in this field all over Malta and Gozo.
Cutajar thanked SportMalta workers who, although they went through a difficult period in 2020, have still reached their goals for this year.
He mentioned that the wisdom of the entity made it possible to complete the projects as well as that the assistance given this year was also a record. He thanked chairman Luciano Busuttil and the workers for their invaluable work.
