Farrugia double puts Sliema five points clear

Sliema Wanderers moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League standings as they came from a goal down to see off Tarxien Rainbows 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

It was far from a comfortable victory for the Blues as despite dominating proceedings for much of the first half, they still failed to make their superiority count.

Instead it was Tarxien who drew first blood on the stroke of half-time. Vito Plut profited from some poor marking from the Sliema defenders to latch onto the ball and hit past Sliema goalkeeper Jake Galea.

The Wanderers failed to panic and after the break they soon managed to restore equilibrium.

In fact, six minutes into the second half Cisotti’s delivery was met by Jean Paul Farrugia who headed past Daniel Fernandes.

The goal inspired the Wanderers to push more men forward and in fact they went on to clinch a winner ten minutes later.

Farrugia was again the protagonist as the Malta striker rose above his marker to meet Cisotti’s cross and head past the diving Fernandes.
