Buoyed by their impressive win over Sliema Wanderers in midweek, Mosta FC will be seeking another major scalp when they face joint leaders Ħamrun Spartans in the BOV Premier League at the Centenary Stadium tomorrow (kick-off: 6pm).
The Blues have been one of the positive revelations in the 2020-21 championship and in midweek, they further underlined their status as the dark horses in this season’s title race when they brushed aside the Wanderers with a dominant display.
With the win, Mosta moved up to second place in the standings on 26 points, level with Hibernians and just two points adrift of the same Wanderers and Spartans.
Tomorrow’s showdown against the Spartans could provide Mosta a perfect opportunity to go top of the standings, something few could have predicted at the start of the season.
One key component in Mosta’s well-oiled machine has been Bojan Kaljevic.
The Montenegrin striker has rediscovered his best form since moving to Mosta and is determined to help his team maintain their charge for a top placing with a strong showing against Ħamrun Spartans.
“It’s going to be a very difficult match for us as Ħamrun Spartans are a very strong side,” the former Valletta forward said.
“However, we are certainly relishing the challenge and we are taking the field determined to try and get the three points. I think that some people don’t give us the respect we deserve as a team.
“We have a very good squad made up of a group of players who work very hard to reach the club’s objective. I can assure you that we are going to put everything we have on the pitch to get the best possible result.
“If we win it’s great as we continue to boost our pursuit of a top placing, if not we will go again in our next match.”
Asked what he felt was the secret behind Mosta’s impressive run this season, Kaljevic said: “We have a very healthy environment in the dressing room and that has been our main weapon. We don’t have big stars in our team, but every member of the squad works hard to help his team-mates on the pitch and that makes the difference.”
On Wednesday, the Montenegrin forward underlined his importance to Mosta’s cause when he put his name on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win over Sliema.
The goal was his 11th of the season and put him just one short of leading scorers Juri Messias, of Gudja United, and Sliema Wanderers forward Jean Paul Farrugia.
“When you have the full confidence of the club it’s easy to play your best football,” Kaljevic said.
“I’m really happy here at Mosta and I am determined to help the club stay in a high position in the Premier League standings.
“At the moment we are not setting any objectives. This month we have a number of crucial matches coming up as after Ħamrun Spartans we face Gudja, Birkirkara and Balzan and after these fixtures we will have a clear idea of what to aspire for.
“Obviously, we are trying to win as many points as possible but the good thing is that we don’t have a lot of pressure on our shoulders to win at all costs and that helps us to express ourselves better.”
