Maltese football woke up on Sunday to the news that former Hungarian striker Gyorgy Handel passed away, aged 61, due to COVID-19.
During his career, the Hungarian forward has created a lot of memories to Maltese football news as he was on the books of St Andrews FC between 1991 and 1993.
After this stint, he headed to Gozo where he became the first overseas player to join a Gozitan club when he signed for Nadur Youngsters and he played for them between 1993 and 1995.
At Nadur, Handel was a prolific goalscorer, netting an impressive 43 goals in two seasons and no surprise he enjoyed hero status at the club.
In Gozo, he was also on the books of Oratory Youths and also formed part of the Gozo FC squad that played in the MFA Division Two Championship in 1995-96 where he scored 15 goals.
Towards the end of his career, Handel also played for Lija Athletic who he helped to an historic promotion to the Premier League in 1995-96 before he signed for Qormi FC.
Handel was an established footballer in Hungary, as he was on the books of Ujpest Dozsa, MKT Budapest as well as FC Gyor.
Handel also had one appearance with the national team when he donned his country’s colours in a 1988 European Championship qualifying 3-2 win over Poland.
