Birkirkara and Mġarr United will be chasing their second straight win of the season when they take on Raiders Lija and Kirkop United in the second week of the MFA Women’s League.
The Stripes launched their quest for a 10th title with a 9-0 victory over San Ġwann, with Alishia Sultana, Veronique Mifsud and Tracy Teuma scoring two goals each. Raina Giusti put her name on the scoresheet alongside newcomers Ruth Steer-Chetham and Charlene Zammit. Steer-Chetham’s goal was the 10th goal scored by a substitute in the MFA Women’s League in 2021. In this game, youth player Lexine Farrugia was handed her senior debut as she came on for Birkirkara in the second half.
Led by Melania Bajada, the Stripes will be crossing swords with Kirkop in Wednesday’s tie, at the Centenary Stadium. The Reds are at the back of a 4-0 defeat against Mġarr in their season opener. Coached by Jochen Lenders, the Reds had academy products’ Raisa Constantino and Ingrid Psaila making their starting debut. Moreover, Kirkop had a number of debutants in their season opener namely Aleksandra Georgieva, Yolande Attard, Emma Zammit and Eliza Cisk.
Mġarr, under the guidance of Michael Mangion in his first year in charge of the Greens, will meet Raiders at the Centenary Stadium. Forward Francesca Chircop propelled Mġarr to victory as she scored the first hat-trick of the season. Defender Rodiana Borg was the other scorer for the Greens, scoring the 100th goal of the MFA Women’s League in 2021 in the process.
On the other hand, Raiders have also collected three points in their season opener after beating Mtarfa 5-0. Denis Guerra’s side scored through Leah Ayres, Miriana Conti – who was scoring her maiden senior league goal, Maya Lucia, Michela Bonello Ghio and Rebecca Vella.
In the other match-up of the week, Swieqi United will enter into action as they face Mtarfa at the Mġarr Ground. The Oranges will be under the guidance of coach Nenad Tomic and will be looking to stage up a competitive challenge for the title together with usual suspects Birkirkara and Mġarr. Swieqi’s team is composed of various Malta internationals including Dorianne Theuma, Shona Zammit, Jade Flask and Kayleigh Chetcuti alongside upcoming talents like Jessica Dimech and Jade Schembri.
They will be meeting an Mtarfa side that opened their league commitments with a defeat against Raiders. They are coached by Simon Spiteri who replaced Shawn Meilak. During the Raiders game, coach Spiteri kepth faith with the core of last year’s players while handing a senior league debut to Amanda Bezzina.
