Valletta striker Mario Fontanella was delighted to reach the 50-goal mark with Valletta FC on Sunday but has no plans to rest on his laurels and is determined to set new records with his club this season.

The Italian striker looked like a rejuvenated player on Sunday against Sirens after grabbing an impressive hat-trick that propelled his team to a convincing win over the St Paul’s Bay’s side at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.

With the three goals scored on Sunday, Fontanella has reached the 50-goal mark and the veteran forward said that he was really proud of the achievement.

“To reach the 50-goal mark with Valletta FC is something of great pride for me,” Fontanella told the Times of Malta.

“My next goal now is to reach the 200-goal mark in my career. At the moment I have netted 188 goals so there is more work to be done.”

On Sunday, Fontanella was flanked by club’s new signing Harris Dilaver and the presence of the towering Bosnian forward certainly helped the Italian to return to his more natural role of secondary striker.

“Everyone knows about my qualities in Malta and are aware that playing in my natural position with a towering striker alongside me, I can express myself better. But I have always put myself to the team’s needs in whatever role the coach wanted me to play as the team always comes ahead of everything else,” Fontanella said.

“Dilaver is an experienced striker and we have developed an excellent understanding immediately from the first training session together. I have no doubt that he will be a great asset for the team.”
