A new chapter beckons for former Maltese footballer Justin Tellus who has been appointed Academy Head of Recruitment and Development Officer at National League club Chesterfield FC, late last year.
Tellus moved to Chesterfield from Leeds United where had been working in a recruitment and development role.
At Elland Road, Tellus was part of the launch and running of elite player development scholarship hubs across the United Kingdom during a successful period for Leeds United, having won the Championship and finished ninth in the Premier League in the following season.
The former Valletta and Birkirkara player was also a development manager at Matlock Town where during a four-year period, he helped their academy produce five players who are now pursuing their careers in the professional game including Yeovil Town’s Max Hunt and Zak Brunt, who has two appearances for Sheffield United’ first team this season and is now on loan at Notts County FC.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Tellus explained that he is eager to work in his role at Chesterfield’s academy and that it is an honour for him to work alongside academy manager Neil Cluxton, CEO John Croot and all components of the technical staff, including head of coaching Kevin Fogg who was responsible for the development of Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell and many others during his time at Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City.
“I am enjoying the project to help expand the academy recruitment system as well at the development of the academy, both at local and international level,” Tellus said.
For Tellus, this is a fundamental step in his career as he will bring his experience from Matlock and from Leeds United at Chesterfield.
FA Cup semi-finalists back in 1996/1997, Chesterfield are striving to return to the Football League.
For over a year, the club has been run by Chesterfield FC Community Trust, becoming the first such organisation to own a professional football club in England.
“The club has grown from strength to strength on and off the pitch since the takeover,” Tellus told the Times of Malta.
“On the now solid foundations, the potential of the club is huge and to be appointed in this role at this historic club, is a huge move forward to progress in my career in the football industry.”
With Tellus’ arrival. the Maltese connection at Chesterfield continues to expand as first team assistant coach Danny Webb has one game under his belt at Marsaxlokk, when the Maltese club played in Europe during the 2007/2008 season under the guidance of Brian Talbot.
