Branko Nisevic on pole to take over as coach of Ħamrun Spartans

Branko Nisevic is the leading favourite to take over as first-team coach at Premier League champions Ħamrun Spartans.

The Serbian coach enjoys a lot of experience in the Maltese Premier League and has been identified by the Spartans as the ideal replacement for Mark Buttigieg.

The Spartans parted ways with Mark Buttigieg by mutual agreement following a meeting on Monday and the club’s top hierarchy immediately set the wheels in motion to find a valuable replacement.

Ħamrun Spartans decided to approach Nisevic who is currently at the helm of Gozitan club Nadur Youngsters.

It is understood that negotiations between the two parties are at an advanced stage and a meeting is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon which could effectively see the return of the Serbian coach in the BOV Premier League.

Nisevic had been at the helm of Nadur Youngsters since last season and under his charge the Youngsters have turned into a dominant force in Gozitan football this term.

In fact, at present Nadur Youngsters are running away with the Gozitan Division One as they are currently leading the standings on 37 points, 14 clear of nearest rivals Għajnsielem.

On Monday, the Youngsters came from a goal down to beat Victoria Hotspurs to preserve their unbeaten record in the Gozitan top-tier.

During his career, Nisevic has been at the helm of Hibernians, with whom he managed to win the Premier League title, and Gżira United.

He was also the Malta U-21 national team coach while also serving as assistant of former national team coach Ray Farrugia.

Ħamrun Spartans are currently fifth in the Premier League standings and will be again in action against Sirens at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday.
