The 2021-22 football season on the sister island came to an end with the presentation of the individual awards in various categories.
The Gozo Football Association announced the winners during the GFA Awards which was held after an absence of two seasons.
Nadur’s 24-year-old-midfielder Stefan Cassar (picture) won the GFA Player of the Year for the first time in his career by gaining the highest number of votes from the journalists, coaches and captains of the Gozitan teams.
During this season, Cassar had his best performances since he returned to Gozitan football after an experience in the Premier League with Sliema Wanderers.
Cassar was a regular protagonist in Nadur’s success and complimented his performances by scoring six goals in the championship.
Other members of Nadur Youngsters won all the other honours tied to the top-flight.
Striker Marcelo Barbosa was the top scorer with 24 goals, Ederson won the best foreign player of the first division, Branko Nisevic, who left Nadur in February to join Premier League side Ħamrun Spartans, was voted as the Coach of the Year while Joseph Zammit, who was also called to form part of Malta’s U-21 national team, won the most promising youngster.
Brandon Said, of second division champions Qala Saints, was the man protagonist for the awards related to the lower category by winning the Best Player of the Second Division and the top scorer of the same category with 17 goals.
Munxar’s Brazilian striker Ayesller Carvalho won the honour as the best foreigner of the second division.
Other awards were given to the best players and top scorers of different categories in the Gozo Youth FA.
The GFA presented recognition awards to George Said, of Victoria Hotspurs, and Joe Camilleri, of Nadur Youngsters for their long years of contribution towards Gozitan football and a special memorial to the relatives of Kevin Vella, a GFA Council Member representing Nadur Youngsters, who passed away in January.
