Ħamrun Spartans have agreed terms to sign Argentine defender Rodrigo Callegari ad Brazilian forward, the Times of Malta can reveal.
The 2021 Malta champions are looking to rejuvenate their squad as they look to mount a stronger challenge for the major honours after a topsy-turvy 2021-22 campaign which saw the team fail to successfully defend their title crown and only manage to secure European football on the final day of the season.
The Spartans, under the charge of Branko Nisevic, are currently looking to build a competitive squad for the new season and are looking to bring in some fresh blood ahead of their commitments in the UEFA Conference League, which would mark their return to European football after an absence of 30 years.
The Reds have been scouring the market to try and bolster their defence and have reached a deal to sign Argentine defender Callegari.
The 24-year-old, who also holds a Spanish passport, is already in Malta and started pre-season training with the Spartans.
After coming through the youth ranks of Argentine club San Telmo and earning promotion t their first team in 2016, he finally headed to Europe four years later when he moved to Italy to sign for Lanusei.
Last summer he joined Serie D side Fasano with whom he made 15 appearances.
On the other hand, Jonny is a 24-year-old winger who spent the whole of his career in Brazil.
In fact, he started his career with Coruripe before moving to Tocantisn EC and Centra.
Last January, he moved to Cruzeiro where he made five appearances and scored one goal.
The arrival of Callegari and Jonny were completed thanks to the Premier League club’s collaboration with M. Global S. Ltd.
Callegari is just one of a number of new signings set to be unveiled by the Spartans in the coming days.
In fact, they have already wrapped up deals to bring three players from Nadur Youngsters, namely goalkeeper Steve Sultana, who will figure for the club in the UEFA Conference League only, midfielder Stefan Cassar and forward Ederson Bruno Domingos.
