A new adventure in the English FA Women’s Championship awaits Maria Farrugia as the Maltese forward has joined Durham Women.

Farrugia, 21, had parted ways with Sunderland Ladies at the end of the 2021/2022 campaign after making her debut for the Lassies in the 2018/2019 season.

Represented by EFG Management, Farrugia has already played in England’s second-tier after making 23 appearances for Sunderland last season.

The former Gozo FC player also scored one goal in a 4-1 win over Sheffield United.

Farrugia was also Sunderland’s hero when she scored the winning penalty that enabled her team to beat giants Liverpool in the women’s League Cup, back in December.

In last season’s Championship campaign, Durham placed sixth in the 12-team with 34 points.

Based in North East England, Durham have recruited other key players ahead of the new season including former England international Jessica Clarke.

The new season will start on on August 21 when Farrugia will immediately meet her former team mates as Durham host Sunderland.
