Swieqi goalkeeper Konlan called up with Ghana women’s national team

Hibs forward Espitia named by El Salvador women’s national team

Swieqi United’s goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan will be representing The Owls during the February women’s international window after being called up by Ghana.

The African side will be involved in two international friendlies, against Benin on Sunday (February 19), before rubbing shoulders with Togo on Saturday (February 25).

These games will serve as a preparation for the 2023 WAFU B Women’s Cup of Nations and the 2024 African Women’s Cup of Nations.

Ghana are coached by experienced coach Nora Hauptle, who hails from Switzerland and who took over in January.

Konlan, 20, has already represented Ghana at youth level having been between the sticks during last summer’s U-20’s Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

She has been playing with both Swieqi senior and U-21’s during the 2022/2023 campaign so far.

The Owls are currently second in the Women’s League, having recorded 29 points in 12 games as they trail Birkirkara by three points.

Meanwhile, another player from the Assikura Women’s League will be part of a national team after Hibernians’ forward Alexis Espitia has been selected by the El Salvador side for their February training camp.

For Espitia, this is her first ever call-up at international level. She has been one of the best performers for the Paolites this season, leading the club’s scoring charts with nine goals.

She embarked in Maltese football during January of last year when she donned the colours of Swieqi, leaving an immediate impression.
