Thornton nominated for EWF Weightlifter of the Year award

Malta’s top weightlifter Tenishia Thornton has been shortlisted among a number of nominees for a prestigious award by the European Weightlifting Federation that will be announced next month, the Times of Malta can confirm.

Thornton has enjoyed a stellar 2022 as the Maltese weightlifter has secured success in some top competitions on the international scene and her achievements have not gone unnoticed by the European federation.

In fact, the governing body nominated Thornton for the Weightlifter of the Year Award which is sponsored by AIPS-Europe and will be announced on April 14 at the continental championships in Yerevan, Armenia.

Thornton will be up against Emily Campbell (Great Britain), Iryna Dekha, of Ukraine, Turkey’s Saziye Erdogan, Koanda Solfrid, of Norway, Giulia Imperio, of Italy, Belgium’s Nina Streckx, Patricia Stenius, of Sweden, France’s Dora Tchakounte, and Toma Loredana, of Romania.

 Last year, Thornton rewrote history in Maltese sport after she was crowned as World Youth champion in Mexico and then also struck gold at the European Youth Championships, European Union competition as well as being crown the overall champion at the European Small States Championship before placing sixth in the junior world championships.

These results saw Thornton being well recognised in Malta after she won the Gold Award at the Maltese Olympic Committee Awards, the Diamond and Achievement awards at the MWF gala while also being voted as the Bulletproof Athlete of the Year as well as the Rising Star of the Year.
