Former Malta midfielder Ryan Fenech to retire on Sunday

Former Malta international Ryan Fenech has announced that he will hang up his boots on Sunday.

The veteran midfielder, who turned 37 on Thursday, announced on his social media that he will bring the curtains down on his playing career with his club Marsa after Sunday’s Challenge League match against Qrendi at the Luxol Stadium.

Fenech has enjoyed a distinguished career which saw him make his senior debut with his hometown club Ħamrun Spartans before moving to Valletta, Sliema Wanderers, Birkirkara and Balzan.

He joined Marsa FC in 2021 from Valletta and this season he took the role of player-coach midway through the campaign and helped the team to retain their status in the division for another season.

During his career, Fenech also donned the national team shirt 50 times, scoring one goal.

“The day has come. Tweny years ago , 5th of April 2003 I made my full debut with my hometown Hamrun… scoring my first goal,” Fenech wrote on social media.

“Next Sunday I will officially play my last competitive game.

“I can’t believe I am writing this. With so much emotions running through my head.

A dream of a child, became a reality 20 years ago, that dream of playing football.

“Honoured to have played with some of the top teams in Maltese football, and shared the dressing room with some of the greatest players this country has ever produced. Proud to have shared the dressing room with you.

“Also,Proud and honored to have represented my country with pride for 50 times.”

Fenech went on to thank all the coaches, members of technical staff and club presidents that had faith in his talent.

“Last but not least… All my family, that where there present week in week out to support me in this beautiful long journey. Thank you,” Fenech continued.

“This has been the toughest decision of my life for me, but I always envisaged leaving on the right terms, in the right way and at the right time – and that is now.”

Despite his retirement, Fenech is determined to start a new career as coach and it is understood that he has already a number of offers on the table but will make a decision where his future lies in the next few months.
