Vingegaard teams up with Van Aert for Tour de France defence

Jonas Vingegaard will be supported by last year’s green jersey winner Wout Van Aert in the Jumbo-Visma team as the Danish rider begins the defence of his Tour de France title this weekend.

Vingegaard can count on five of the team-mates who helped him triumph a year ago, with Christophe Laporte, Tiesj Benoot, Sepp Kuss and Nathan Van Hooydonck also named Monday in the Jumbo-Visma squad.

Only Primoz Roglic, who is resting after winning the Giro d’Italia in May, and Steven Kruijswijk are missing from the 2022 line-up. Kruijswijk crashed heavily at last month’s Criterium du Dauphine.

The pair will be replaced by last year’s Paris-Roubaix winner and Dutch national champion Dylan van Baarle, and Wilco Kelderman for the July 1-23 race which begins in the Basque port of Bilbao.

Jumbo-Visma won six stages of the 2022 Tour de France, with Vingegaard taking overall victory as well as the king of the mountains title. Van Aert won the green points jersey for best sprinter.

“We exceeded our wildest dreams last year with six stage victories, the polka dot jersey, and most importantly, the green and yellow jersey,” said sporting director Merijn Zeeman.

“This year we are dreaming big too. Our ambition is to bring the yellow jersey back to Paris.”
