Third new signing in two days
Malta Division One side Gzira Athleta unveiled two new signings on Wednesday as they named Polish centre Piotr Stelmach and US forward Dajuan Moorer to their roster for the coming season.
In what appears to be a late surge in summer transfers by the Maroons, coach Christos Kousidis have now confirmed their third newcomer of the transfer window.
One day after announcing US guard Malik Riddle, Athleta confirmed that Stelmach, a veteran centre who comes with experience in the US in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division 1 at Mississippi State University and time back home with Polish side Czarni Slupsk.
6’7 Stelmach who can play both the power forward and centre position will provide an even bigger boost for Kousidis’ squad due to the fact that as a Malta resident for various years, Stelmach will compete as a local player this coming season.
Speaking to the club’s socials, Stelmach rallied for support from the club’s fans.
“To all our fans, come and support us! We are preparing for this season, and we will be ready, but for our team to be successful, everyone counts. Be a part of our family!” Stelmach said.
Later in the day, Athleta confirmed 6’9 forward Moorer.
The 27-year-old comes to Malta in his second year overseas after his time at Lander University in the NCAA Division 2.
The Florida native was last in Germany with the Aschersleben Tigers where he played 21 games and averaged 34 minutes on court. With the Tigers, Moorer averaged 11.3 rebounds a game while on offence he was 52.3% from the field and 64.8% from the line.
Now with Athleta, Moorer sounded his excitement to be part of the team.
“I’m excited to be a part of the Athleta family,” he said.
“I can’t wait to work with the players and to see what kind of bonds I form with the community this year. I’m extremely excited to start the season so stay toon to see the action!”
The duo join an Athleta side in transition after a run of troubled seasons in all competitions and will especially be pushing to turn around the disappointment of losing household name Nathan Xuereb who has moved to Luxol as well as guard Billy-Joel Zammit who will be playing for Hibernians this coming season.
