Gudja United are set to make a few changes to their first-team squad this month as they look to step up their bid to avoid relegation this season.
The Southerners are currently at the bottom of the Premier League standings with six points, level with Sirens and Sta Lucia, and need a quick turn in fortunes to ensure they boost their hopes of retaining their place in the top flight for another season.
Last month, Gudja United have installed Renzo Kerr Cumbo as their new first-team coach following the departure of Jesmond Zammit.
In the past few weeks, the club’s top hierarchy have been working hard to revamp their squad.
So far, the club have released three overseas players who were at the club, namely goalkeeper Yaren Sozer, defender Matteo Cassini and striker Santiago Angulo while Abou Toure, another forward, is also in talks to have his contract rescinded.
The departure of Sozer was already planned by the Southerners as the lanky goalkeeper had asked the Premier League club in early December to return to his family due to family reasons.
The club accepted the players’ request and agreed with him that he could return home after playing in the team’s final league match of last month.
The Gudja United technical staff, spearheaded by Kerr Cumbo, are currently scouring the market for reinforcements this month and are looking at various overseas players who are on a trial at the club.
Sources close to the club made it clear to the Times of Malta that Gudja United will not make any rush signings as they want to make sure that they bring to the club the right players that can help their cause of avoiding relegation.
It is therefore unlikely that Gudja United will be able to complete any transfer signings before their first match of 2024 when they face Sliema Wanderers on Sunday.
