Joe Caruana Curran pondering Malta FA presidential bid after clubs’ approach

Joe Caruana Curran has been approached by several clubs over the possibility of submitting his nomination for the Malta FA presidential elections that will be held during the association’s General Assembly on March 15, the Times of Malta can confirm.

Caruana Curran has been away from the local football scene for almost two decades as decided to step down from his post of president of Valletta FC he decided to step away from the Beautiful Game.

Caruana Curran will long be associated with Valletta FC’s golden years in the 1990s during which he guided the team to winning every major honour in Maltese football as well as setting some unprecedented records in the local game. He led the team to win five honours in the 1996-97 season and then went one better as he guided the team to bring to capital six trophies in one season during the 2000-01 campaign

Contacted by the Times of Malta, Caruana Curran said that in the past two days he had been approached by a number of clubs to submit his nomination for the Malta FA presidential elections.

“I can confirm that a few clubs have approached me in the past 48 hours and asked me to submit my nomination for the upcoming MFA presidential elections on March 15,” Caruana Curran told the Times of Malta.

“It’s clear that I will take my time to analyse the situation and discuss this issue with my family before I decide on whether I will take on this challenge.”

Should Caruana Curran decide to contest this year’s election it will be the second time that the Maltese businessman has contested the Malta FA presidential elections.

In fact, in 2004 he challenged former incumbent Joe Mifsud for the post of MFA president but lost the duel as Mifsud came out on top when collecting 56 votes against the 41 earned by Caruana Curran.

Since then, Caruana Curran went on to take a top administrative role in other sporting body as he served as president of the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association before a successful stint as president of the Aquatic Sports Association where he played a key role for the waterpolo national team to an historic qualification at the European Championship finals.

Caruana Curran was replaced as ASA president last summer when he lost the presidential elections to Karl Izzo who was voted as the new chief of the Maltese aquatic sport governing body.

If Caruana Curran will submit his nomination it could see three nominations for the post of MFA president.

At the moment, MFA president Bjorn Vassallo has already confirmed his intention to seek a second term in office next month.

Former Birkirkara striker Ridha Dardouri has also told the Times of Malta that he is planning to submit his nomination for the MFA presidential elections.
