Acquatic sport to be held behind closed doors – ASA

The Acquatic Sport Association of Malta announced that no fans will be allowed at the National Pool to watch any of its competitions.

The decision was taken following an urgent meeting called by the health authorities with the Acquatic Sport Association following a sudden rise in Covid-19 cases in Malta.

Initially, a small number of fans were allowed to attend waterpolo and swimming competitions at the National Pool following the sports restart last month.

However, the sharp rise in cases this month has convinced the authorities to bring in fresh restrictions.

“Following an urgent meeting requested by the Health Authorities this morning, we would like to inform you that all ASA activities will be held behind closed doors with immediate effect,” the ASA said in a statement.

“Social distancing measures are to be strictly adhered to inside the venue and venues will be responsible for ensuring frequent disinfection of surfaces and the appointment of a person responsible for ensuring public measures are followed.

“No spectators will be allowed to enter the venue. The changing rooms and shower facilities is not recommended and should be discouraged. Athletes should therefore shower at home.”

The ASA added that while it understands that this new is not the most welcome to all those who follow the sport, “it is nonetheless our responsibility to follow the directives issued by the Health Authorities especially considering the situation which has developed over the last two weeks.

“The Association looks forward to the Covid-19 spread being controlled in the weeks ahead with a view to hopefully welcoming supporters in the latter part of our competitions.”
