Prime Minister Robert Abela and Clint Camilleri, the Minister for Gozo, assisted to the official laying of the foundation stone of the Acquatic Sports Centre in Victoria, Gozo.
This major project is expected to be completed following a global investment of €16 million that will see the construction of a swimming pool at an Olympic size and a number of facilities that will cater for gymnastics, basketball, badminton, squash, wall climbing, acrobatics, weightlifting, aerobics, yoga and martial arts.
Added to that the sports complex will be equipped with top-notch facilities including first-aid rooms.
Abela expressed his satisfaction for the progress being made in the project and how for the first time Gozo will have an aquatic sports complex at the heart of the island.
On his part, Camilleri, the Minister for Gozo, explained how this project was crucial for the sporting sector in Gozo while it will be a main source for economic growth on the island.
This is because it is expected to create new ways to attract athletes and foreign teams in Gozo.
“The Gozitan people will surely benefit a lot from this project as while it will limit the burden of several Gozitan waterpolo who have to travel to Malta every day for their waterpolo training,” Camilleri said.
The Gozo Minister said that the laying of the foundation stone means that a lot of progress has been made in the excavation phase and shoring of the site.
At the moment, the construction of the sports complex is under way and is expected to be completed this summer.
“Works on this complex, that is spread on a 5,000 square metre of land, are at an advanced stage in infrastructural work on the construction of the swimming pool,” Camilleri concluded.
