Malta women’s international player Maria Farrugia has signed a new contract at Sunderland Ladies, the English club announced on its social media.
“The attacking midfielder has put pen to paper on a one-year deal on Wearside, as the Ladies prepare for their first season back in the FA Women’s Championship,” the club statement said.
Sunderland coach Melanie Reay said: “I am delighted to have Maria back with us. She is a player of real quality who provides us with great attacking threat, and I look forward to working with her again this season.”
Sunderland Ladies will be playing Championship football next season, after being granted promotion by the FA following the premature ending of England’s third-tier due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Back in March, the FA Women’s National League – the third tier – was declared null and void.
Afterwards, all clubs participating in Tiers three to six of the Women’s Pyramid were permitted to apply for promotion via the Upward Club Movement process.
Sunderland and Watford were the two teams selected from the National League North and National League South respectively and will make up the 12-team Championship in 2021/2022.
Among the teams playing in the Championship will be Bristol City, who dropped from the Women’s Super League, Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic and Blackburn.
Malta player Farrugia had scored one goal in six appearances last season season as she has nine goals in 31 appearances over three campaigns at Sunderland.
