Malta U-17 crush Ukraine to finish 13th in European Championships

The Malta U-17 national team ended their commitments in the European Championships in style when they brushed aside Ukraine 12-4 to finish 13th place in the contintenal competition at the National Pool.

It’s a remarkable result from the Maltese youngsters who after their thrilling victory over Turkey earlier in the week, again delivered the goods with a fine display to complete their campaign with an impressive display.

The first session of the match saw both teams battling hard with four goals shared. The hosts surged into a two-goal lead through Jayden Cutajar and an Alec Fenech penalty goal. But the Ukrainians fought back to restore parity by the end of the first session.

But Malta soon took control of proceedings in the second session, and goals from Cutajar and Kieyan Borg handed the home side a 4-2 lead when ends were changes.

Farrugia’s men stepped up a gear in the third session when they managed to find the net four times through Jake Cachia, Matthew Mifsud, Fenech and Cutajar to surge to an 8-3 lead with one session left.

The Ukrainians could not respond and the Maltese wrapped up their win when netting four more goals through Cutajar, Sam Gialanze, Matthew Mifsud and Russell Caruana to wrap up a comfortable victory.
