Ħamrun Spartans the favourites for his signature
Steve Borg’s move to Premier League champions Ħamrun Spartans has moved a step closer after Gżira United announced on Wednesday that they had accepted the player’s request to move to another club during the January transfer window.
On Tuesday, reports in Maltese media had said that Ħamrun Spartans were discussing the possibility of signing the veteran Malta international defender but had yet to approach Gżira United with an offer.
However, the transfer took a decisive twist on Wednesday took a new twist when Gżira United all but bid farewell to the experienced defender.
“After a meeting held between the Club President and Captain Steve Borg, the player showed the desire to move on in his career,” Gżira United said in a statement.
“The club would like to thank him for the time he spent with our Club, and wishes him the best for his future professional career.”
Borg also wrote on his facebook page to confirm that Thursday will be his final day as a Gżira United player.
“It’s Official…tomorrow will be my last day as a Gzira United Football Club player. I would like to thank all the people involved in this Club,” Borg wrote.
“Especially Sharlon Pace the president for making this transfer possible, Darren Abdilla the Coach that always believed in me, the committee, technical staff, all the players and the supporters. Thank you for the last 15months! Wish you all the best for the future. It’s time to look forward and work to get back on the pitch.”
Borg joined Gżira United last season from Valletta and last season he skippered the side to a fourth-placing in the BOV Premier League that helped the club to compete in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers this summer.
In total, last season Borg made 22 appearances with Gżira United, netting two goals. This season, Borg’s season was hampered by a serious adductor injury he suffered with the Malta national team last Octorber.
In total he made five appearances for the Maroons before being forced on the sidelines.
Borg is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is hopeful to return back to action when the Premier League resumes from the two-week break for Christmas festivities in January.
