The Maltese waterpolo community on Sunday woke up mourning the loss of one of the greatest in the local game following the news of the death of Sandro Cosby.
Cosby was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers to have played the game in Malta not only for his former club San Ġijan ASC but also for the national team.
During his career, Cosby has been a pivotal figure for the Saints as his heroics in between goal has helped the club to numerous domestic honours in the 1990s.
Cosby’s former club, San Ġiljan ASC led the tributes to their former goalkeeper.
“San Giljan ASC mourns the loss of former San Giljan and Malta National Goalkeeper, Sandro Cosby,” San Ġiljan ASC said in a statement.
“We will forever treasure the great memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.
“Rest in Peace Sandro.”
Sliema ASC also issued a statement to honour the memory of Cosby.
“Sliema ASC is sorry to hear about the loss of former San Ġiljan and Malta goalkeeper Sandro Cosby,” the club said.
“We would like to send our condolences to the San Ġiljan Community and Sandro’s family during this difficult time.”
Former San Ġiljan ASC women’s goalkeeper Antonella Rogers posted an emotional tribute to Cosby on her social media.
“All the people from San Ġiljan and those who knew you are shocked and mourning the loss of Sandro Cosby who for me and for many was known as the ‘saviour’ between goal of the San Ġiljan waterpolo team,” Rogers wrote.
“Thank you Sandro for the countless occasions that you given us so much joy with your excellent play and brilliant saves that contributed to our league success as well as other honours.
“Like we used to sing you at the National Pool ‘there’s only one Sandro Cosby’ was continuously coming through my mind when I heard the news.
“As a former goalkeeper of the women’s team of San Ġiljan, you were my idol and you inspired me a lot.
“Thanks Sandro, a legend of waterpolo and a friend. Rest in Peace. Condolences to Josette Cosby and the Cosby family.”
