Rachel Cuschieri netted her second Serie A goal of the season as she sealed Lazio’s stunning 3-1 victory over title hopefuls Sassuolo, on Sunday afternoon.
The Malta women’s international scored at the death to extend Lazio’s victory to a two-goal advantage and propel the Biancoceleste to just their second win of the season. In the process, they all but dashed Sassuolo’s hopes of reigniting themselves into the title race as well.
It was a much-needed victory for Lazio to maintain their slim hopes of staying in the top-flight alive. With three teams set to drop, Lazio remain second-bottom with 7 points – 8 points away from satefy and six games left to play.
Cuschieri was deployed from the start as a midfielder and went on to play all 90 minutes.
Sassuolo, on their part, were missing their Maltese player in Haley Bugeja as she is recovering from a minor injury.
Bugeja’s side failed to capitalise on Juventus and Roma sharing the spoils on Saturday as they remain third on 32 points – three adrift of the last UEFA Women’s Champions League spot occupied by the Giallorosse and six behind league leaders Juventus.
