Gilbert Agius has been unveiled as the new coach of PSIS Semarang.
The Indonesian Super Liga club made the official announcement on their social media and said that the former Valletta international will take over the reins of team midway through the season.
The Indonesian club said that Agius had put pen to paper on a deal until 2025 and added that his ability to groom young talent was seen as a major reason behind his appointment.
“Maltese coach Gilbert Agius has been appointed as the new head coach of Laskar Mahesa Jenar,” the Indonesian club said in a statement.

“Previously, Gilbert Agius was the coach of the Malta U-21 national team and had become the caretaker coach of the Malta Senior National Team from November to December 2022.
“Apart from the Maltese national team, Gilbert Agius has also managed a Maltese club, Valletta and at that time one of his players was Taisei Marukawa.
“Before becoming head coach, Gilbert Agius was a footballer and became one of the pillars of the Maltese national team’s front line with a record of 120 caps.
“This UEFA Pro licensed trainer was appointed as head coach of PSIS due to several factors.
“One of them was because Gilbert Agius had handled the Maltese youth national team and this was considered suitable by the PSIS management because the majority of players in Laskar Mahesa Jenar were young players.”
PSIS Semarang will be in action on Friday morning against Persis and it will remain to be seen if Agius will be on the touchline or will watch his new team from the stands.
