Hibernians stun Swieqi United
Birkirkara have completed another memorable Assikura Women’s League campaign as they sealed their 11th domestic title.
Heading into this week’s game against Raiders Lija, Birkirkara were just one point away from retaining their crown – a match they won 2-0.
However, they were declared champions 24 hours before after Swieqi United surprisingly fell to Hibernians in a 2-1 defeat.
Against Raiders, Birkirkara scored a goal in each half through Marta Grosso and Ruth Steer-Chetham to pick up their 15th win of the campaign – from 17 league outings.
They will wrap up their season next week when they face San Ġwann before being presented with the league trophy.
Meanwhile, Swieqi succumbed to their third defeat of the season despite managing to level terms midway in the second half.
Hibs’ captain Martina Borg drew first blood after capitalising on an Alexis Espitia’s cross.
The Owls, though, did equalise when Salamatu Abdulai fired home her fifth goal of the season.
Nonetheless, Keith Gouder’s Hibernians managed to inflict defeat to Swieqi when Borg converted from the penalty spot, handing the Paolites a perfect ending to their season – next week, they will serve the league’s final bye of the season.
Elsewhere, Mġarr broke little sweat to beat Mtarfa 9-1 in Matchday 14’s rescheduled fixture.
Kelly Agius Pace and Amber Grech scored a hat-trick each with Francesca Chircop grabbing a brace and captain Brenda Borg rounding the win.
Angele Fenech was Mtarfa’s scorer in this game which will be repeated next week in their third and final matchup.
