Hibernians FC are on the verge of re-signing talented midfielder Lucas Caruana.
The 17-year-old left the Paolites last summer to join Sampdoria in the Italian Primavera championship.
The Malta U-19 international had started his campaign brightly with the Genoa-based club but towards the end of the season he struggled for first-team football and the young midfielder decided to leave the club.
It is understood that Caruana was courted by a number of Italian clubs but no concrete offers were presented to the player who decided it was time to return to Maltese football.
Hibernians immediately stepped up their interest in Caruana and negotiations have reached an advanced stage, with only the final details remaining before the player puts pen to paper on a deal with the Paola club.
At Sampdoria, Caruana made 19 appearances and scored one goal.
His performances have earned him a place in the Malta U-19 final squad that took part in the European Championship finals last July.
The acquisition of Caruana is surely a huge boost for Hibernians and coach Branko Nisevic who are bringing in one of the most talented young players in Maltese football.
