Former Floriana FC president Anthony Grech Sant dies

Floriana FC have announced that former club president Anthony Grech Sant died on Wednesday, aged 76.

Grech Sant was one of the most successful presidents in the history of Floriana FC as during his time in charge he managed to win every honour in Maltese football while leading the club to some exceptional results in UEFA club competition.

In a statement, Floriana FC paid tribute to their former president.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of former Floriana Football Club President Anthony Grech Sant,” the club said in a statement.

“Anthony Grech Sant won all the local major honours with Floriana Football Club including the historic 25th League Championship in the 1992-93 season.

“Anthony Grech Sant’s legacy will long live in the memories and hearts of us all.

“Floriana Football Club would like to express its deepest condolences to all the family of Anthony Grech Sant during this time of grief.”

Grech Sant was elected as president of Floriana FC in season 1989-90.

During his reign as president, he managed to build a very strong team, luring to the side some exceptional players such as David Cluett, John Buttigieg, Richard Buhagiar, Denis Cauchi, Mark Miller and Brian Crawley among others.

In season 1992-93, Floriana managed to win the league title and wrapped up the season in style when they brushed aside long-time rivals Sliema Wanderers 5-0 in the FA Trophy final.

Floriana ended the season in style when they beat Valletta 4-1 in the Super Cup final.

A few months later, Floriana went on to complete a clean sweep of honours as at the start of the 1993-94 season they won the Lowenbrau Cup along with Valletta FC and the Super Cup tournament.

During the summer of 1993, Floriana continued to rewrite the club’s history books when they knocked out Lithuanian side Ekranas from the Champions Cup after recording back-to-back 1-0 victories in both legs to secure their first-ever qualification in UEFA’s elite competition.

The Greens went on to play Portuguese giants Porto in the next round to bow out 2-0 on aggregate.

Grech Sant stepped down as club president in season 1998-99 and ended with a total of nine domestic honours – one league title, two FA Trophies, one Super Cup, one Lowenbrau Cup and the Super Cup four times.
