Champions Birkirkara absent due to European commitments against FC Zurich
This weekend’s action from Matchday 3 of the domestic women’s league will see the return of Swieqi United.
The Owls skipped last week’s high-profile clash with Birkirkara due to Stripes’ commitments in the UEFA Women’s Champions League which will force them to reschedule this weekend’s game against Mtarfa as well.
Led by new coach Saviour Darmanin, Swieqi had launched their campaign with a 7-1 rout of Mtarfa at Dingli Ground.
On Saturday, Swieqi will face San Ġwann as they eye their second win of the season.
San Ġwann, on their part, have picked one point from their opening couple of matches after last Saturday’s draw against Lija Athletic.
Meanwhile, Hibernians and Mġarr are also in action this weekend with the two teams looking to bounce back following their recent six-goal thrilling encounter.
Both Paolites and the Greens sparked into life in Saturday’s 3-3 game that earned them a well-deserved point each in a spectaular game.
Leah Ayres scored a hat-trick for Hibernians while Mġarr saw newly-signed Fernanda Peinado and Joelma put their names on the scoresheet as well.
Hibernians will face Lija Athletic, in their first women’s football campaign since 2014/2015, whose point against San Ġwann was secured thanks to a goal from foreign signing Vanessa Carneiro.
On the other hand, Mġarr face debutants Valletta who are at the back of a comfortable 9-0 victory over Mtarfa.
Young midfielder Francesca Bartolo, scorer of Valletta’s first goal in the game, became the club’s maiden scorer in the women’s game.
