The Malta Football Association announced that ten clubs have been awarded a UEFA club license which will allow them to take part in UEFA club competitions this summer.
The club licensing system was first implemented in 2004 as a set of requirements that clubs have to meet to be eligible to compete in UEFA club competitions.
It is now part of several national associations’ strategic goals for club growth and better governance, as well as being integrated into how clubs run and a crucial factor in the important choices they undertake.
Over the past year, there have been some changes, and the Maltese clubs have complied with all regulations.
Initially, fourteen clubs had submitted their application by the end of the deadline, January 31, 2024. Twelve were from the Premier League namely Balzan, Birkirkara, Floriana, Gżira United, Ħamrun Spartans, Hibernians, Marsaxlokk, Mosta, Santa Lucia, Sirens, Sliema Wanderers, and Valletta.
The other three applications came from women’s clubs Birkirkara, Swieqi United and Hibernians.
On Tuesday, the MFA announced that nine of the 10 Premier League clubs that submitted their application received the UEFA License. These are Balzan, Birkirkara, Floriana, Gżira United, Ħamrun Spartans, Hibernians, Marsaxlokk, Mosta, and Sliema Wanderers.
The other club to receive the license are Birkirkara FC Women’s Team who are due to represent Malta in the UEFA Women’s Champions League this summer.
Santa Lucia FC withdrew their application following their elimination from the FA Trophy.
