Balzan FC part ways with coach Oliver Spiteri

Balzan FC have parted ways with first-team coach Oliver Spiteri, the Premier League club announced in a statement.

The Premier League club made the announcement just one day after the Reds secured their status in the top-flight for another season following a 1-0 win over Marsaxlokk at the Tony Bezzina.

However, it seems that the club’s struggles this season have forced the club’s top hierarchy to change their coaching set-up and end their relationship with Spiteri.

Club president Anton Tagliaferro said in a statement that the club had experienced a few highs and lows in the last two years and that prompted the club’s decision.

“We have had a number of highs and lows in the last two years and Balzan FC and I would like to thank Oliver for his hard work and commitment and wish him all the best for the future,” he said in a statement.

“A new coach will be selected in due course with the club currently going through a short list of candidates.”

Spiteri returned to Balzan for a second stint in 2022, helping the club to secure European football in his first season in charge.

In fact, they managed to reach the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference after ousting Slovenian side Domzale 5-4 on aggregate before bowing out to Belarus side Neman 2-0 on aggregate.

However, this season the club struggled for consistency and ended up battling against relegation, only managing to secure their status on the final day of the season.

Spiteri had already been in charge of Balzan between 2013 and 2017 and during that four-year spell he led the team to the final of the FA Trophy.
