Sliema Wanderers are closing in on a major transfer coup as they have agreed terms to sign Malta wing back Cain Attard, the Times of Malta can confirm.
The Wanderers are coming into the off-season after an impressive return to the Premier League which saw the team not only secure a return to UEFA club competitions after an absence of ten years with a third-placing in the Premier League but went on to clinch a record 22nd FA Trophy title.
The Blues have made it clear that they had no plans to rest on their laurels and coach Paul Zammit had told the Times of Malta that it was important the club would work towards reaching the next level of performance.
And it looks like the Sliema’s top hierarchy fully backs their coach as they have managed to secure the services of Attard.
The 29-year-old spent the past season playing for Os Belenenses in the Portuguese Liga 2, where he made 13 appearances, scored one goal and provided one assist.
Attard, who had come through the youth nurseries of Melita FC and Pieta Hotspurs, was encouraged to join the Wanderers as he will re-unite with his former coach Zammit with whom he worked during his spell at Birkirkara FC.
The Malta right-back, who is currently recovering from a small injury, is expected to arrive in Malta at the end of the month to seal his move to the Wanderers.
Attard will then join his new team-mates at the start of June as the Wanderers will kick-off their pre-season preparations ahead of their commitments in teh UEFA Conference League qualifiers in July.
