Gilbert Agius will continue his coaching career in Indonesia after his club PSIS Semarang extended his contract, the top-flight team said.
The Maltese coach’s previous contract of one and a half year had come to an end as PSIS finished sixth, just outside the play-offs, in the 2023/2024 campaign.
Nonetheless, Agius’ tenure was deemed successful as he will remain in charge of the club for the upcoming season.
In their club statement, PSIS said that his role will be upgrade from Coach to Head Coach as Agius will now be involved in the scouting team for foreign players, a staff that the Maltese coach will lead himself.
“Today we announce that PSIS has extended Gilbert Agius’ contract for another season, However, his job is to be added as manager coach because we are adopting the coaching team in Europe,” said PSIS Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Yoyok Sukawi, Wednesday (29/5).
Since taking over in February 2023, Agius coached PSIS in 34 matches, registering 15 wins and 11 draws.
“Hopefully the extension of coach Gilbert’s contract can make PSIS better because for a season and a half the management thought Gilbert was able to bring PSIS more character in playing,” he concluded.
