Ħamrun Spartans are closing in on their first transfer in the summer transfer window when they have agreed terms to sign Brazilian defender Mayron, the Times of Malta can reveal.
The Spartans are working hard to prepare their squad ahead of their participation in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers this month.
The team is now under the charge of Alessandro Zinnari, who last season was on the books of Santa Lucia, and in the past weeks the Italian coach has been focusing on setting up his technical staff and scour the market for reinforcements.
One of the priorities for the Spartans was the signing of a centre back and their eyes fell on Brazil-based defender Mayron.
The 24-year-old defender spent the majority of his career in his homeland where he donned the colours of Crato. Cruzeiro-AL, Cabense and Murici before moving to Araruama.
During his career he managed to win the Brazilian second division championship as well as the Copa Alagoas.
Negotiations between Mayron and the Spartans are at an advanced stage as the 24-year-old has agreed terms and is expected to arrive in Malta to undergo a medical.
Should the left-footed defender pass his medical he will put pen to paper on a one-year deal.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday the Spartans announced Zinnari’s backroom staff.
The Italian coach has again relied on the same group of coaches he worked with at Santa Lucia.
In fact, Alessandro Longo will be the assistant coach while Matthew Farrugia will take the role of goalkeeper’s coach. Jacopo Longo will be the match analyst while Enzo Cestaro will be the fitness coach.
In a statement, the Spartans thanked their former staff Stefano De Angelis (assistant coach), Daniele Lanza (goalkeeper coach), Emerico Pellegrini (fitness coach) and Giovanni Vilardi (match analyst) for their work with the club under the charge of former coach Luciano Zauri.
“We thank Mr Zauri and his technical staff for their significant contributions, which have helped secure the 10th league title and the sixth Super Cup for our club,” the Spartans said in a statement.
“We welcome Mr Zinnari and assure him of our full support in his new role.”
Meanwhile, it is understood that De Angelis could continue his career in Maltese football as speculation has been rife in recent weeks that Birkirkara could approach him to take over the role of first team coach.
Birkirkara are searching for a new coach after they parted ways with Jose Borg at the end of the season.
