Robert Micallef has stepped down as president of Santa Lucia FC.
The decision was announced during the club’s Annual General Meeting that was held on Thursday.
The Santa Lucia president is coming from a challenging 12 months which saw him contest the presidential elections of the Malta Football Association, where he was beaten by current incumbent Bjorn Vassallo.
Added to that, he also saw his side Santa Lucia lose their top-flight status on the final day of the season.
Micallef said he decided to move away from the club due to personal reasons.
“As of today, I am no longer the President of Santa Lucia FC, a decision that was both difficult and necessary due to personal and various reasons,” he said on his facebook page.
“Over the past four years, our time in the top tier has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but it has been an invaluable journey of personal growth and learning for me.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve my hometown team, always striving to do my best and cherishing every moment. My heartfelt thanks go out to the committee members, the dedicated players, and the talented coaches I had the privilege to work alongside.”
Micallef paid a special tribute to the club’s fans for their unwavering support throughout the years.
“Special thanks to our supporters, who, despite being few in number, consistently showed immense heart and unwavering support,” Micallef said.
“I have every confidence that the new committee will successfully guide the club back to where it truly belongs. I will always treasure the memories and experiences from my time with Santa Lucia FC.
“A special thanks to my family and close friends, especially Christine Butterworth, Valentina Micallef, Jonathan Mallia and Mark Mifsud, for always being with me, offering their unwavering support and encouragement throughout my tenure.
“Your belief in me has been a constant source of strength and inspiration. Thank you for being there every step of the way.”
