Ħamrun Spartans have continued to strengthen their squad when they agreed terms to sign Brazilian attacking midfielder Wendel Barros, the Times of Malta can reveal.
The 23-year-old forward agreed personal terms with the Spartans and has already travelled to our islands to start his pre-season preparations with the Malta champions.
Barros arrived in Malta on Wednesday and attended his first training session for the Spartans on Thursday.
On Friday, Barros was involved in Ħamrun Spartans’ friendly match against Floriana and the Brazilian gave a glimpse of his attacking instincts when he blasted home the winner in a 2-1 victory.
Kyrian Nwoko put Floriana ahead but the Spartans, aided by their young players in the squad, turned the game around in the closing stages of the match.
Emerson Marcelina equalised from the penalty spot after substitute Mattias Ellul was brought down inside the area.
And then it was the turn of Barros to fire home the winner following a free-kick action.
Shaizen Attard’s curling drive hit the bar but Barros was on hand to poke home.
Barros spent his career in his homeland where he came through the youth ranks of Fortaleza.
From then he moved to Caucaia, Gremio Anapoli and Concorcordia.
This year, Barros was on the books of Itabaiana where he made 12 appearances and scored one goal.
Barros is the fourth Brazilian player to join the Spartans in the close season following goalkeeper Celio, defender Mayron, and forward Vitor Manarin.
