Angelo Chetcuti has handed in his resignation as general secretary of the Malta Football Association, the Times of Malta can confirm.
Chetcuti, a former committee member of National Amateur League side Birżebbuġa St Peter’s, informed the top brass of the Malta FA of his decision on Monday.
Chetcuti confirmed to the Times of Malta of his decision to step down from his post and said that he took his decision as he wanted “to move on in his professional career.”
“I can confirm that I informed the internal circles of the MFA of my decision to resign as general secretary of the Malta Football Association,” Chetcuti told the Times of Malta.
“In the past months I have had several discussions with the president about my intention to step down from my position with a view to move on professionally.
“I appreciated the fact that he asked me to reconsider several times. Leading an organisation like the Malta FA requires an extraordinary degree of committment, something I hope I have given throughout the past eight years.
“I have earlier this week informed the Officers of the Association and it is my intention to do the same with the association’s members during the forthcoming General Assembly on the 23rd October 2024.
“I will certainly make myself available to support my replacement in the best way possible so that the transition can be a smooth one.”
Dr Chetcuti was elected as the new MFA General Secretary in November 2016 when he had replaced Bjorn Vassallo to the post after the latter took the post of director of European member associations at FIFA.
During his time in charge, Chetcuti held an influential role in the organisation of a number of initiatives taken by the MFA, particularly the hosting of UEFA’s U-19 European Championships that were held in Malta in 2022.
Dr Chetcuti was behind the digitisation of the football management processes at the heart of organised football and governance informs introduced by the local governing body of football.
