Centurion Mixed Martial Arts returns to Malta

by Mark Wilson Smith

Centurion FC, the exciting MMA promotion that was established in Malta, makes its eagerly-awaited return to our shores tonight.

The event, which is being staged in collaboration with the Sigma iGaming conference, will be hosted at Ta’ Qali’s basketball arena.

Founded over seven years ago, Centurion has shown significant global growth since its debut show at Paola’s Corradino Sports Pavilion in May 2017. They can now list Serbia, the UAE, the Philippines, and Cyprus among the countries where they have held events.

However, it is Brazil that they now call home – a country that has seen eight of their fight cards, including the World’s only MMA show to take place on the famous Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

Centurion’s president and founder, Roberto Gallo, told The Times of Malta: ‘‘Centurion is excited to be back in Malta, where it all began. This time, we return as a sports organization that has evolved in structure and global reach.

“It’s always a privilege to carry the Maltese flag to audiences around the world through our events, where the local governments have welcomed and supported our expansion and support to the development of the local Combat Sports.

“Today, Centurion ranks among the top MMA organizations in Brazil, and we’re excited to showcase this growth to our Maltese fans. Our longstanding partnership with SIGMA in Malta has played a key role in making this event possible; thanks to their unwavering support, we’re here once again!’’

Combat sports fans will be treated to a mixed card featuring MMA, kickboxing and boxing bouts; with a four-man elimination tournament also taking place.

“On a personal note, it’s crucial to address some challenges facing Maltese combat sports,” said Gallo.

“The lack of support in the development and management of the local athletes is limiting their potential, often confining them to national events alone. Once again, Centurion faced difficulty finding local athletes willing to take on this challenge and push their limits.”

Although the card will be stacked with fighters from Brazil and Italy, Maltese fans will be familiar with Għargħur’s Josef El Shemy and Toraino Singleton who both train out at the WarDogs MMA gym.

“Despite these obstacles, we’re proud to return and showcase what Centurion has become. We look forward to inspiring Malta with the level of excellence and dedication that defines us today,’’ Gallo concluded.
