A Virgiliu Postolachi goal in stoppage time dashed Malta’s hopes of an automatic promotion in the UEFA Nations League, as Moldova have secured a League C spot in the next edition.
Malta needed at least a draw between Andorra and Moldova to keep their hopes alive of finishing first but the Moldovan selection managed to snatch a late winner with a 92nd minute goal.
With Moldova promoted and Andorra cannot finish in the top two, the result leaves Malta in second place even if they beat the latter in Tuesday’s match at the National Stadium, in Ta’ Qali, due to Moldova’s better goal difference in the direct encounters against the Maltese side.
Malta’s route to a League C promotion will now have to go through the play-offs, which will be held in March 2026.
The draw will be held on November 22 with Malta expected to face either the best fourth-placed team (Latvia, as it stands) or the second-best fourth-placed team in League C (Luxembourg, as it stands).
