During last weekend’s MatchDay of the 360 Sports Malta Premier, the Challenge League and the Women’s League, team captains wore a specially-designed armband to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, observed worldwide on November 25.
This was another initiative under the Sports Unity concept, a project launched by Ħamrun Ħanin.
Despite progress and increased awareness, one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, and Sports Unity is bringing football clubs together to send a strong message that no further excuses are acceptable to eliminate violence on women once and for all.
Ħamrun Ħanin’s campaign, which is supported by GasanMamo Insurance, will also feature strong video messages by a number of top women players, including Malta and Inter star Haley Bugeja, who call on fellow women to speak out and end the cycle of violence.
These armbands are now being auctioned to raise funds for Dar Merħba Bik, an organisation dedicated to supporting women affected by domestic violence.
Sporting fans, or anyone wishing to get his or her hands on this unique memorabilia may place his bid until December 19 on https://app.galabid.com/sportsunity_armbands/
In a heartfelt extension of this initiative, the Veterans Malta Football Association have also presented a number of signed armbands, making them even more unique and meaningful.
