Hibernians face crucial test to extend their lead in a thrilling Assikura Women’s title race when they cross swords with champions Birkirkara.
The Paolites, sitting first on 26 points, have a four-point advantage over the Stripes, who remain in second place with a game in hand.
A victory for Hibs would push them seven points clear and deal a first blow to Birkirkara’s hopes of retaining their title.
This encounter holds extra weight as Hibernians, just like other contenders in Swieqi United and Mġarr United, are seeking to dethrone Birkirkara, who have been the benchmark of Maltese women’s football in recent years.
The Stripes secured a domestic treble last season and have dominated the league for much of the past decade.
However, their recent form has faltered. They are coming off two defeats against Swieqi including in last weekend’s Super Cup and will be without experienced defender Charlene Zammit due to a one-game suspension.
Nevertheless, Birkirkara will view this as a crucial opportunity to bounce back and show their resilience.
Hibernians are riding a wave of confidence, having delivered a commanding 10-0 victory over Valletta in their last outing.
Elsewhere in the league, the title race remains fiercely competitive. Swieqi will take on Lija Athletic while Mġarr face San Ġwann, with both teams needing wins to keep pace at the top.
As Hibernians and Birkirkara go head-to-head, their rivals will look to capitalize on any slip-ups to maintain the pressure in what has been one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory.
The Owls are at the back of their first ever Super Cup triumph. Dorianne Theuma’s side sit joint-second with Birkirkara on 22 points. Lija, their opponents, are sixth on nine points.
Mġarr, on their part, sit fourth on 21 points with six victories and three draws. Mtarfa are bottom without a single point.
