Floriana FC have reached a verbal agreement to sign Bolivian winger Gabriel Sotomayor during the January transfer window, a report in the Bolivian media revealed.
The Greens have enjoyed a highly-successful campaign so far in the 360 Sports Malta Premier and on Saturday will be battling to finish top in the Opening Round when they face Birkirkara at the National Stadium.
But still, the club is looking to bring in a couple of reinforcements during the January transfer window in a bid to add more depth to Darren Abdilla’s squad ahead of the start of the Closing Round of the Championship.
A report on the Bolivian championship official broadcaster quoted the young winger as saying that he has reached a verbal agreement with the Maltese club to continue his career in the Maltese championship as of next month.
“I’m happy because it’s a great opportunity for me, for my career, because I have the chance to continue growing,” said “Pito” Sotomayor to the company that is in charge of broadcasting the matches of the Professional Division.
The Bolivian winger is coming from a frustrating campaign in the Bolivian championship as he struggled to secure a first-team place. He made 11 appearances with the 2023 Bolivian champions, scoring four goals and providing two assists.
Sotomayor said that he worked hard during the year, but unfortunately, the coaching staff did not support him throughout the season.
“It didn’t work out for me this year, because of the few minutes I was on the field of play, but I never let my head down,” he said.
Sotomayor thanked his family for their constant support. “My family was always with me; I thank my mother, my father, my girlfriend and my grandmother who is up there.”
Sotomayor is a Bolivian international player and made his international debut for his country last November in a World Cup qualifier as Bolivia lost in Ecuador 4-0.
It is understood that Sotomayor will travel to Malta in the coming days to finalise his move and should everything go to plan he will be available for selection for coach Darren Abdilla for when the Closing Championship kicks off on January 4.
