Cyclo-cross star Van der Poel sidelined with rib injury

Cyclo-cross star Mathieu van der Poel has pulled out of Wednesday’s X20 Cyclocross Trophy in Baal with a rib injury a month before he bids for a seventh world title.

The Dutch rider’s Alpecin-Deceunink team said the 29-year-old had “significant pain in his ribs” after crashing into a pole during the cyclo-cross event in Loenhout last Friday.

“The discomfort has gotten worse in recent days,” his team explained, adding that “after consulting the medical team this morning (Wednesday), Mathieu made the difficult decision not to start today”.

“We will closely monitor his recovery to determine if he will be able to participate in the Koksijde cyclo cross the day after tomorrow (Friday).”

The cyclo-cross world champion has won the five events in which he has taken part this season and is favourite for the world championships in Lievin, France, early February where he will bid to match Belgian Eric De Vlaeminck’s record of seven world titles.
