The women’s league continues with the second matchday of the second round, as the title race remains tightly contested.
Joint leaders Hibernians and Swieqi United both sit atop the standings with 38 points, though Swieqi hold a game in hand after their last week’s fixture against Mġarr United was postponed due to bad weather.
Hibernians will kick off this matchday against Mġarr, aiming to maintain their position at the top. However, they will be without their American forward Alexis Espitia, the league’s second-highest scorer with 16 goals, who serves a one-match suspension due to accumulated yellow cards.
The Paolites have managed just one victory in their Top Four encounters so far – a thrilling 4-3 win over Birkirkara on Matchday 1. Since then, they have drawn against both Mġarr and Birkirkara while suffering a defeat to Swieqi. With the Owls set to play today as well, Hibernians will be eager to secure a win and keep the pressure on their title rivals.
Mġarr, currently third with 35 points, are closely trailing the leaders and remain in contention for the championship. Despite missing key players Maia Debono, Brenda Borg, and Veronique Mifsud, the Greens hope to continue showing resilience in this phase. They have secured two draws and a victory in the Top Four, reigniting their title ambitions.
Meanwhile, Swieqi will take on Birkirkara, looking to retain their spot at the summit. Their last outing saw them edge past Hibernians 1-0, courtesy of a Rafanny penalty.
Defending champions Birkirkara, currently fourth with 33 points, are still fighting to get back into the title race. Last week, they received a boost with the return of goalkeeper Janice Xuereb following a 10-month absence, while also introducing new Colombian forward Laura Granados, who previously played in the United States college system.
