Malta vs Ireland boxing showdown set for Saturday at Montekristo

By Mark Wilson Smith

The Maltese amateur boxing scene is set to ignite as Prize Boxing Promotions proudly presents an electrifying night of action at the prestigious Montekristo Estate on Saturday.

This event marks a significant collaboration with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, providing local talent with invaluable international experience.

Boxing enthusiasts can look forward to an action-packed evening featuring 22 thrilling contests, including six fights where local boxers will be matched against each other, and a highly anticipated 16-fight face-off between an Irish select team and a Maltese select team.

With the first fight scheduled to begin at 5pm, fans are in for an unforgettable display of skill, determination, and sportsmanship.

A platform for local talent

The importance of international competition for Malta’s fighters cannot be overstated. Given the limited opportunities for domestic matchups on the island, branching out internationally is a necessary step forward for Maltese boxing.

“This event gives me great pleasure to be working hand in hand with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association,” said Prize Boxing’s founder Demis Tonna.

“We want to give as much experience as possible to our local boxers, and this is the only way possible. Malta is a small island, and we are limited to the number of local bouts we can match up, so going international is the only way forward.”

Leading the charge for Malta will be Dyson Schembri and Bradley Mula, the latter serving as the Team Captain for Malta’s national team.

Both fighters have showcased their skills on the world stage, having competed in the 2024 World Boxing Championships as well as the 2023 and 2024 European Championships.

Their experience and leadership will be crucial as they take on a strong Irish squad.

A tough challenge

Although the Irish fighters come into the event with a wealth of experience, the Maltese squad is determined to prove they belong on the same stage.

Tonna continued: “Although we do not have as much experience as our Irish opponents, I am very confident that our local boxers can hold their own in the ring. It is my goal to get the local talent as high in the game as possible, and that has been my goal from day one.”

Fans are encouraged to secure their seats early for what promises to be a spectacular evening of boxing action. Be there to support our local talent!
