Gilbert Agius is no longer the coach of PSIS Semarang, the Indonesian club announced in a statement.
In a statement, the Indonesian club said that they had appointed Muhammad Ridwan as caretaker manager until the end of the season as they look to preserve their top-flight status.
“PSIS Semarang officially terminated the contract of coach Gilbert Agius. PSIS management appoints Muhammad Ridwan as caretaker for the remaining Ligue 1 competitions 2024/25,” the Indonesian club announced in a statement.
“Thank you for everything, Coach Gilbert Agius.”
Earlier this month, the Times of Malta had reported that the former Valletta FC striker was mulling his future at the Indonesian club and was considering all options.
The former Malta forward has been working at PSIS Semarang for the past two-and-a-half years and his contract with the Indonesian top-flight club was set to expire at the end of the season.
Agius took over the reins at PSIS Semarang in February 2023 and helped the club to retain their top flight status when they finished 13th in the 18-team division.
However, in the following season, Agius helped the club to their best-ever placing in the Indonesian championship when they finished sixth overall and just missed out on a top-four spot by two points.
This season, PSIS Semarang are engaged in a battle to avoid relegation and are currently 17th in the standings, on 25 points, just four points away from safety with just four matches to go.
