Ħamrun Spartans are bracing themselves for a tough draw in the UEFA Champions League as they could face highly-seeded Swedish giants Malmo or FK Zalgiris, of Lithuania, as UEFA announced the Malta champions’ possible opponents in the first qualifiying round draw.
The Spartans will discover their opponents in this season’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday afternoon when the draws of UEFA’s most prestigious competition will be be held in Nyon.
On Tuesday morning, UEFA have split the participating teams in the first qualifying rounds in different pots, and the Spartans were pitted in Group 1 as one of the unseeded sides.
Besides Malmo and Zalgiris, the Spartans could face some tricky opposition if they are pitted with one of the remaining three sides in the pot, namely Latvia’s FC RFS, who in 2021 knocked out Hibernians in the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round, KuPS Kuopio, of Finland.
The other team is Welsh side The New Saints, who made it to last season’s UEFA Conference League group stages.
The draw of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round will be on Tuesday at 2pm.
